About Sobremesa

In this portfolio, I focus on expression of injustice in the ways in which I have lived my life and are important to me, but also ways in which I can understand justice and my place in it. In the case of the portfolio, food equity and immigration injustice are big themes. I also incorporated things that were really new for me, like dance, and incorporated it in ways that were new to me, like poems, collaging/other forms of art, film with the personal film that I made about food. The research paper that I wrote was about something that is deeply personal for me, immigration, but analyzing it in a way that was very new to me, film and documentary. My purpose was to find how justice played a role in those everyday moments that I had experienced and were personal for me, but to uncover them in ways that were new to me. I had a lot of fun with the different events that I went to. This first year of college has been a time of learning and discovering new things, approaching topics that I was familiar with but analyzing them in different ways, through different lenses, and discovering topics that were completely new and analyzed in ways that I had never thought of. This portfolio is an example of the diverse topics that we discussed in class, and the diverse experiences that I had outside of humes. My theme is sobremesa. The word sobremesa is a word that does not exist in the English language. It is a word in Spanish that encapsulates the experience of sitting together after a meal with loved ones, long after the meal has been finished, to talk and digest, often with coffee, tea, or dessert. The literal translation is “over the table”. It is prolonging the conclusion of the meal time. Sobremesa has been something that I have cherished growing up in my Mexican household. That is how I connected with my family. That is how I connect with my friends in college. Sobremesa came to me when I was thinking of how to integrate all the themes, topics, and stories that we learned about in Humes. I am learning how to digest it through all the mediums that I experimented with, all the topics that I cover, and ultimately find the meaning of justice through it.
